Marianne Faithfull presses her right palm to her chest and says, “I’ll cry if I tell you this story, Joe.” She then takes a deep breath as if trying to suppress the rush of raw emotion and the memory itself – though both, in fact, have filled her eyes not with tears but the kind of incandescent glow that suddenly makes Marianne look about six years old rather than two years from sixty. Fittingly, as it transpires, because that memory involves Marianne’s father, Dr. Robert Glynn Faithfull, who left home when she was six and consequently left his daughter with a “deep sense of loss” although this she denied for most of her life. Until not long before her dad died, actually, which gives us the time frame for that memory…
